30 Lessons from 30 Days in Malaysia

Today something a little lighter…

So here they are, 30 lessons I learnt in 30 days in Malaysia.

  1. Life goes by incredibly fast. Carpe diem.

Cameron Highlands, Malaysia, in the rainforest. It was awesome.

  2. I can be at ease anywhere in the world. It only depends on my mental state, the location is irrelevant.
  3. I don’t tan. I only stay pale or burn my skin.
  4. It’s not that great idea to travel to a country without knowing a word of their own language…
  5. …But if you have a local to help you, you can get away with that. Having a local show you around makes it a lot better experience anyway.
  6. The less you plan, the better. The most enjoyable moments just happened, they weren’t planned.
  7. Nature always beats any places built by people, no matter how extravagant, in beauty.
  8. Not all tears are bad tears.
  9. What has a red face in a Chinese restaurant? Me. Some foods, be it Chinese or sometimes Indian – or Thai – just burn my mouth.
  10. Expanding on that, Chinese food either doesn’t taste anything, or burns your mouth so much it doesn’t taste anything.
  11. Stimulation really doesn’t make you happy. I might have eaten all kinds of foods and enjoyed all kinds of pleasures, but ultimately any happiness I got out of it was related to pushing my comfort zone or to people around me.
  12. Malaysian people really like to talk about food. For me it’s merely sustenance.
  13. The Avengers fucking sucked. I unfortunately went to cinema to watch it in Malaysia and wasted couple of the precious ours spent there.
  14. Modern movies aren’t that good. No wonder I never go to cinemas. If “The Avengers” is considered good… Ugh, I guess I’ll just stick to the old classics from now on.
  15. If a Finnish anti-social kid can travel 10 000 km to the other side of the world without any major faux pas, it just proves that cultural differences aren’t that big anymore.
  16. People are the same everywhere, regardless of the race or culture. Only that they tend to be in a better mood in warmer climates.
  17. I’m extremely stoic and hard to get a reaction out of. At least in certain situations.
  18. When you’re away, you always have this glorified image of home in your mind. I realized this already while being there, but upon returning home I realized how much in fact I had glorified it.
  19. Starting a new habit in a unfamiliar environment rarely works.
  20. When you act through your intentions, no matter how scared you are, it still feels awesome.
  21. Putting yourself through discomfort improves you as a person and once the discomfort is over, you enjoy deeper happiness.
  22. Personality is very fluid and you can undergo a lot of change over the course of month.
  23. I still haven’t gotten over the fact that The Avengers sucked shit. Even after over a month since seeing it.
  24. Even all the great moments that happened are now mere pale reflection in my memory. Again, carpe diem.
  25.  Only at the verge of losing something you fully realize it’s importance and meaning to you. It’s a cliché lesson to learn, but that’s one that I learned repeatedly.
  26. Asian TV is fucked up. Even more fucked up than European and American TV.
  27. Malaysian traffic is a free-for-all death trap. I’ve heard that there are worse places, but compared to Finland I’m fearing for my life every time in a car. And whereas in Finland seeing a car accident is a rare occasion, in Malaysia car wrecks are almost daily occurrence.
  28. 12 hour flights? Piece of cake.
  29. Travelling is not hard at all.
  30. But leaving someone you love behind is the hardest thing a person can do.
Hope you enjoyed today’s list. All the praise, abuse, and other comments below, I’ll be happy to hear anything.

    Hahahahahaha…. love your list!

Yeah. TV here sucks man! Not only they’re not many interesting things to watch, a lot are also censored!!!

Do you know that here they censored the words “beer”, “drugs” “gay” “lesbian” on air wave… so don’t expect to listen the full lyrics from songs by Lady Gaga, even Katy Perry!

Keep writing and do the video man! Love it! Your writing make me laugh… hehehehehe :D

    Take care

    Thanks Chetz!

Only positive thing about the TV thing is that I don’t watch that much TV anyway.

No I didn’t know about that censorship thing. Glad you’re enjoying my stuff, I’ll keep pushing out content.

    LOL Jarkko,

    This list was awesome man.

I can only wonder what crazy things would you write if you came to Mexico.

Spot on man, keep up the good work!

Maybe we shall see once I go to Mexico, it’s not at the top of my priorities but I’m sure I’ll eventually go there too. Hope it will end up crazy in a good way!

    Hi Jarkko,

Nice list you have. Carpe Diem… Is that seize the moment? I agree with it. Life is short, so you have to make it as meaningful as you can. Good luck with the Quick Start Challenge.

Yes, carpe diem means seize the moment. Thanks for the props.
